It was a gray and cloudy morning. Alex, Viola, Ellie, and Lori were playing on the living room carpet, building a track for toy cars with the sofa cushions.

"My car is faster!" shouted Lori, making his red vehicle zoom along.

"No, mine is!" replied Alex laughing, while Max, his dad, watched them from the armchair with a gentle smile.

Grace, Alex's mom, was tidying up the toys when suddenly a familiar sound was heard: "CHUFF CHUFF!"

"The little train!" all four children shouted, jumping to their feet.

From the window they saw Toby the Magic Train arriving, with his colorful carriages that sparkled even under the gray sky.

"Climb aboard children, we're off with glee, to a magical pond for you to see!" said Toby the Magic Train with his singing voice.

The four friends waved goodbye to Max and Grace and quickly climbed onto the colorful carriages. With them also climbed Alex's four cats: Sophie the black kitten curled up near Viola, Dora the tabby watched attentively out the window, while chubby Poldo and agile Milo settled at Alex's feet.

The little train departed with a cheerful whistle, passing through gray clouds that gradually cleared. They flew over woods and meadows, until they arrived near a wonderful pond.

"Wow!" exclaimed Ellie with wide eyes.

The pond was beautiful! There were pink and white water lilies floating on the water, green frogs croaking happily, and colorful dragonflies twirling everywhere with their shiny wings.

"Have a great adventure, my dear friends, be careful and come back to me in the end!" said Toby the Magic Train, and then disappeared in a little cloud of steam.

The children got off near the pond. Sophie the black kitten sniffed the air, while Dora the tabby was already running toward the water.

"Look at all the frogs!" said Viola pointing at the pond.

"And those dragonflies are blue!" added Lori.

But just at that moment, from behind a bush, a deer jumped out! It was small and graceful, with light brown fur and big, sweet eyes. It was hopping happily among the trees, making wonderful leaps.

"Hello children!" said the deer with a cheerful voice. "My name is Hazelnut and I live here near the pond. What a lovely surprise to have guests!"

"Hello Hazelnut!" said all the children.

The deer approached hopping and Alex reached out his hand to pet it. Hazelnut's fur was soft as velvet.

"I like it when you cuddle me gently!" said Hazelnut happily. "Animals are happy when you treat them with kindness."

Poldo, the fat cat, approached Hazelnut and began to purr. He wanted to be friends with the deer too.

"Do you want to play with me?" proposed Hazelnut. "I know all the secret corners of the pond!"

"Yes!" the children shouted enthusiastically.

But just as they were about to follow Hazelnut, the sky began to change. The gray clouds from before were becoming even darker.

"Oh no," said Hazelnut worried, "a storm is coming! I can smell the rain in the air. We need to find shelter, and quickly!"

A distant thunder rumbled in the sky. Viola huddled close to Alex, a little scared.

"Don't worry," said Alex trying to be brave, even though he was a little scared too.

"Where can we take shelter?" asked Ellie looking around.

"There's a perfect place," said Hazelnut, "but it's on the other side of the pond. We need to build a shelter here, before the rain arrives!"

"How do we do it?" asked Lori.

Hazelnut began to think. "We need big branches and leaves. We can lean them against that big tree over there and make a sort of canopy."

The children looked at each other. They had to hurry! The sky was getting darker and darker and the wind was starting to blow.

"I'll go look for branches!" said Alex, and ran toward the woods. Milo, the agile cat, followed him jumping through the bushes.

"I'll collect the big leaves!" said Viola, who was very determined when she had something important to do.

"I'll help Viola!" said Ellie.

"And I'll carry the branches near the tree!" said Lori, who was very fast.

Hazelnut hopped among them, helping them find the best materials. "These branches are perfect! They're sturdy and long!"

Alex came back with a big branch, but it was heavy. Dora the tabby kitten tried to help him by pushing with her head, but she was too small.

"Wait Alex, I'll help you!" said Hazelnut, and with his muzzle he pushed too. Together they managed to carry the branch near the tree.

Another thunder, this time closer! The wind was blowing harder.

"We need to hurry!" said Viola collecting big fern leaves.

Everyone worked together. They leaned the branches against the tree trunk, forming a sort of tent. Then they put the leaves on top of the branches to cover the gaps.

"We're missing something to hold the leaves in place!" said Lori worried.

At that moment, Sophie the black kitten meowed loudly. She had found some long stems of tough grass near the pond!

"Good girl Sophie!" said Alex petting her. "We can use these to tie the leaves to the branches!"

Hazelnut showed them how to weave the stems. "See? You do it like this, passing one over and one under."

The children imitated him, tying the leaves to the branches. Poldo, the fat cat, was sitting watching them, purring encouragingly.

Finally the shelter was ready! And just in time, because the first drops of rain began to fall.

"Inside, quickly!" said Hazelnut.

Everyone squeezed into the shelter: Alex, Viola, Ellie, Lori, Hazelnut and the four cats. They were huddled close together, but they were safe and dry.

The rain began to fall hard, drumming on the leaves above them. But the shelter held! Not even a drop got in.

"We did it!" shouted Viola all happy.

"We all worked together!" said Ellie smiling.

While they waited for the rain to stop, Hazelnut told them stories about the pond. He talked about the frogs that sang at night, the dragonflies that had speed races, and how he loved to jump among the flowers in the morning.

"You know," said Alex petting Hazelnut, "you're very nice. I like being with you."

"You are very kind too," replied the deer. "Many animals are afraid when they see people, because not everyone treats us well. But you have been gentle and caring with me."

"My dad Max always says we should be kind to everyone," said Alex, "including animals."

"That's true," added Viola, "my mom Marti always explains to me that animals can feel if we're good or bad."

After a while, the rain began to lessen. The drops fell slower and slower, until they stopped completely.

When they came out of the shelter, the children were amazed. The sky had become magical! There were incredible colors dancing in the sky like colored ribbons: green, purple, light blue and pink.

"What is it?" asked Lori in wonder.

"It's the northern lights!" said Hazelnut. "It's very rare around here. Look how the colors dance! It's the way the sky celebrates after the rain!"

The colors moved slowly in the sky, creating beautiful shapes. The frogs in the pond had started croaking again, and the dragonflies flew among the colorful reflections on the water.

But it wasn't over. While they watched the northern lights, shooting stars also began to appear! One, two, three... many stars crossing the sky leaving luminous trails.

"We can make wishes!" said Ellie with sparkling eyes.

Alex closed his eyes and wished he could come back to visit Hazelnut. Viola wished that all the animals in the world would be happy. Ellie wished to always see beautiful things like these. Lori wished for many more adventures with friends.

The cats were also watching the sky: Sophie was purring, Dora had wide eyes, Poldo had lain down on the wet grass, and Milo was jumping around trying to catch the reflections of light.

"Thank you for helping me build the shelter," said Hazelnut, "and thank you for being so kind to me. When you treat animals with love and respect, they become your friends forever."

At that moment Toby the Magic Train appeared with his "CHUFF CHUFF!"

"It's time to go home, dear children so fine, you've learned to love the animals divine!" he said with his rhyming voice.

The children hugged Hazelnut, petting him gently. The deer was happy and made little jumps of joy.

"Come back to visit me!" said Hazelnut.

"We will!" they all promised.

They climbed onto the little train with the four cats. As Toby rose into the air, they waved to Hazelnut who was hopping happily by the pond, under the northern lights and shooting stars.

When they arrived home, Max and Grace were waiting for them.

"How was the adventure?" asked Grace.

"We met a deer!" Alex told them all excited. "His name is Hazelnut and he's so sweet! We built a shelter together!"

"And then we saw the northern lights and shooting stars!" added Viola.

That evening, while Grace hugged Alex before sleep, he said to her: "Mom, Hazelnut taught me that animals are our friends, and that we should always treat them with love and respect."

"That's very true," said Grace kissing him on the forehead. "Animals can feel when we're kind to them, just like your cats Sophie, Dora, Poldo and Milo, who love you so much."

Alex fell asleep happy, dreaming of hopping with Hazelnut near the magical pond, under a sky full of colors and stars.

**MORAL OF THE STORY:** Animals are special beings who deserve our love and respect. When we are kind and gentle with them, they become our friends and give us beautiful moments. Treating animals well means petting them gently, not scaring them, and taking care of them when they need help.
