Ziggy and the Broken Cart in the Rooftop Garden
📅 Published on January 9, 2026
✨ Story Summary
Children visit a rooftop garden, help a four-armed creature fix its broken cart, befriend a scary-looking mole-guardian, and receive a magic seed.
Ziggy was jumping in the garden with his friends. Lily, Skye and Dash were all there too. The sun was warm and bright.
"Look at me!" said Ziggy, hopping on one foot. His four cats watched him from the grass. Luna the black cat purred. Tiggy the striped cat swished her tail. Chunk, the big fat cat, yawned. Rocket, the tall cat, sat ready to jump.
"I can jump too!" said Dash. He ran fast and jumped high.
Lily picked flowers. "These are pretty," she said.
Skye sat quietly, watching clouds go by.
Then they heard it. CHUG-CHUG! WHOOSH!
"Toby the Magic Train!" shouted all four friends.
The shiny blue train stopped in front of them. Steam went PUFF from its chimney.
"Hello children, time to play! Up above we'll go today! Where the gardens touch the sky, and the vegetables grow so high!"
"Yay!" said Ziggy. He climbed on first. His cats jumped on too.
Lily, Skye and Dash got on next. The train started moving. CHUG-CHUG-CHUG!
Up, up, up they went. Through white fluffy clouds. Higher and higher. Ziggy's tummy felt funny, like butterflies were dancing inside.
"Where are we going?" asked Lily.
The train went through one last cloud and stopped. They were on top of a very tall building. But this was not just any roof. It was covered in plants! Big plants, small plants, green plants everywhere!
"Wow!" said Dash.
There were tomatoes as big as balls. Carrots poking out of wooden boxes. Beans climbing up tall sticks.
"HELP! HELP!"
Someone was crying! The children looked around.
Behind the tall corn plants, they saw a creature. It had two big purple eyes, four arms, and one long green tail. Its body was orange like a pumpkin.
"What's wrong?" asked Ziggy bravely. His cats stood close to him.
"My cart! My special cart! It broke!" The creature pointed with two of its arms. "Now I can't move my vegetables to the market!"
The children saw a wooden cart with a broken wheel. Vegetables were spilled everywhere. Potatoes rolled on the ground. Lettuce leaves were scattered about.
"Oh no!" said Skye softly.
"The market closes when the sun goes down," cried the creature. "If I don't get there, all my vegetables will go bad!"
Ziggy looked at the sun. It was already moving down in the sky. They didn't have much time!
"We'll help you!" said Ziggy.
But then they heard a GROWL. A big shadow moved behind the bean plants.
"What was that?" whispered Dash, moving closer to his friends.
"That's the Roof Guardian," said the creature. "He doesn't like visitors. Quick, hide!"
The children ducked behind big pumpkin leaves. Ziggy's heart went THUMP-THUMP. Luna and Tiggy pressed against him. Chunk and Rocket stayed very still.
Heavy steps came closer. STOMP. STOMP. STOMP.
Through the leaves, they saw something huge. It looked like a giant mole, but with wings! Its fur was dark brown. Its claws were long and sharp. Its tiny eyes blinked in the sunlight.
"Who is here?" the Guardian grumbled. His voice was deep like thunder.
The orange creature stepped forward. "Just me, Guardian. My cart broke."
The Guardian sniffed the air. "I smell... children!"
Ziggy held his breath. Lily grabbed Skye's hand. Dash stayed very quiet.
The Guardian walked around, looking. He came closer to their hiding spot. Ziggy could see his big claws. One more step and he would find them!
Suddenly, Rocket the cat jumped out! He leaped high in the air, right over the Guardian's head!
"A cat?" said the Guardian, turning around.
Rocket ran between the vegetables. The Guardian followed him, confused. "Strange cat on my roof!"
While the Guardian chased Rocket, Ziggy had an idea. "Quick!" he whispered. "Let's fix the cart!"
They ran to the broken cart. The wheel had come off.
"I'll hold it up," said Dash. He was strong for his size.
"I'll find something to fix it," said Lily. She looked around and found some strong vines.
Skye quietly gathered the spilled vegetables. She put them in neat piles.
Ziggy and his other three cats helped too. Luna carried small tomatoes in her mouth. Tiggy dragged carrots. Chunk pushed potatoes with his big belly.
But they needed something to make a new pin for the wheel. The old one was broken in pieces.
"Look!" said Lily. She found a thick stick near the cucumber plants. "Will this work?"
Ziggy pushed the stick through the wheel hole. It fit! They wrapped the vines around it tight.
"The Guardian is coming back!" warned the orange creature.
They could hear STOMP STOMP getting closer. Rocket came running back, jumping into Ziggy's arms.
"Good job, Rocket!" said Ziggy.
They pushed the wheel onto the cart. It stayed!
"Hurry, load the vegetables!" said Dash.
Everyone grabbed vegetables. Potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, beans, lettuce. They put them all in the cart. Even the cats helped, carrying what they could.
The Guardian appeared. "You! Children! You're not supposed to be here!"
"Wait!" said the orange creature. "They helped me! Look, they fixed my cart!"
The Guardian looked at the cart. His face softened a little. "You fixed it?"
"Yes," said Ziggy. "We wanted to help."
The Guardian walked closer. The children stepped back, still scared. But then the Guardian did something surprising. He smiled! His big mole face looked much friendlier when he smiled.
"That's very kind," he said. "This garden feeds many creatures below. When the cart broke, I was worried too."
"You were?" asked Skye.
"Yes. I guard this garden, but I also care about everyone who needs food from it." He looked at the orange creature. "I'm sorry I scared you. I thought you were here to take things without asking."
"We would never do that," said Lily firmly.
The Guardian nodded. "I see that now. You have good hearts."
He reached behind a tall sunflower and pulled out something shiny. It was a small golden seed.
"This is for you," he said, giving it to Ziggy. "Plant it when you get home. It will grow something special."
"Thank you!" said Ziggy. He put the seed in his pocket.
"Now," said the Guardian, "let me help too."
With his strong claws, he helped push the cart. Together, they all pushed it to the edge of the roof where there was a special ramp going down.
"To the market!" said the orange creature happily. All its four arms waved thank you. Its tail swished with joy.
The sun was lower now, painting the sky orange and pink.
CHUG-CHUG! Toby the Magic Train appeared again.
"Time to go home, don't be late! You did something really great! Helping friends both big and small, that's the best thing of all!"
The children climbed aboard. Ziggy's cats jumped on too, Rocket doing an extra big leap.
"Goodbye!" called the orange creature.
"Goodbye!" waved the Guardian. "Come back anytime!"
The train started moving. Down through the clouds they went. Ziggy watched the rooftop garden get smaller and smaller until it disappeared.
Soon they were back in their own garden. The train stopped with a gentle PUFF.
"Thank you, Toby!" said all the children.
The train whistled happily and chugged away.
Ziggy took out the golden seed. "Should we plant it now?"
"Yes!" said his friends.
They dug a small hole in the garden. Ziggy placed the seed inside. They covered it with soft dirt and gave it some water.
Luna, Tiggy, Chunk and Rocket sat in a circle around it, as if guarding it.
"That was scary when the Guardian came," said Dash.
"But he was actually nice," said Skye.
"He just looked scary," added Lily.
Ziggy's mom Grace came outside. "What are you all doing?"
"We planted a magic seed!" said Ziggy.
Grace smiled and picked him up for a big hug. "How wonderful! What adventure did you have today?"
The children told her everything. About the rooftop garden, the orange creature with four arms, the broken cart, and the scary-but-nice Guardian.
The next morning, Ziggy ran to check the seed. A tiny green sprout was already showing! And it sparkled in the sunlight, just a little bit, like magic.

THE MORAL: Sometimes things that seem scary at first are not really bad at all. The Guardian looked frightening, but he was actually kind and caring. When we take time to understand others instead of running away, we might make new friends. Also, helping others when they need it is always the right thing to do, and kindness often brings unexpected rewards.
