Ziggy and the Builder Beaver at the Fast River
📅 Published on January 2, 2026
✨ Story Summary
Children travel to a fast river where they help Benny the Builder Beaver recover his hammer and fix his dam before rain floods fish homes.
Ziggy was jumping in the garden with his friends. "Hop, hop!" went Ziggy. Lily was drawing a big sun with yellow chalk on the ground. Skye sat quietly watching a butterfly. Dash ran around them in circles.
Luna, Ziggy's black cat, rubbed against his leg. Tiggy, Chunk, and Rocket were sleeping under the big tree.
"CIUFFFF CIUFFFF!"
The children looked up. Here came Toby the Magic Train, puffing white clouds!
"Hello little ones, ready to play? Where water rushes fast all day!" said Toby, his red paint shining in the sun.
"Toby! Toby!" shouted Ziggy, jumping even higher. His cats opened their eyes and stretched.
All four children climbed aboard. The cats jumped in too - Luna first, then Tiggy, then Rocket made a huge leap, and Chunk needed a little push from Ziggy.
"Hold on tight!" said Lily, grabbing the rail.
WHOOOOSH! The train went faster and faster. The garden disappeared. Trees flashed by in green blurs. Then suddenly...
SPLASH!
They were beside a rushing river! The water moved so fast it made white foam. The sound was loud - ROARRR went the water over the rocks.
"Wow!" said Dash, his eyes big.
"Water go fast!" said Skye, holding tight to Ziggy's hand.
But then they heard something else. "Help! Help!"
The children looked around. There on a rock in the middle of the fast river was a beaver! But this wasn't just any beaver - he wore a tiny yellow hard hat and had a tool belt around his fuzzy belly.
"I'm Benny the Builder Beaver!" he called. "My hammer fell in the water! Now I can't finish my dam before the big rain comes!"
Ziggy's cats all stood up, their tails puffy. Luna meowed softly.
"Oh no!" said Lily. "We help you!"
But the river was moving so fast! The water splashed high on the rocks. SPLASH! SPLASH!
"Look!" said Dash, pointing downstream. The hammer was stuck between two rocks, but the water kept pushing it.
"We need to hurry!" said Benny. "If the rain comes and my dam isn't fixed, all the little fish homes will wash away!"
Dark clouds were already gathering in the sky. Thunder rumbled far away - RUMMMBLE.
Ziggy had an idea. "Rocket! You can jump far!"
Rocket the cat looked at the rocks in the river. There were some flat ones making a path, but they were wet and slippery.
"No, no!" said Benny. "Too dangerous for a cat!"
But then Chunk, the big fat cat, did something surprising. He walked to the river edge and put one paw in. "MROW!" he said, which meant he had an idea.
"What Chunk doing?" asked Skye.
Chunk found a long stick. He pushed it toward the hammer with his strong paws, but it wasn't long enough.
"We need longer stick!" said Lily. She ran into the forest. Dash ran after her. "I help!"
But in the forest, it was darker. The trees were tall and made scary shadows. CREEEEAK went the branches in the wind.
"I scared," said Dash quietly.
"Me too," said Lily. "But Benny needs us. Be brave!"
They found a longer branch, but it was stuck under a heavy log. They pulled and pulled. "PULL!" said Lily. Nothing happened.
Meanwhile, by the river, the hammer was starting to move again! The water pushed it closer to the edge where it would fall into the deep pool below.
"Oh no, oh no!" said Benny, hopping on his rock.
Tiggy the brave cat suddenly ran forward. She jumped to the first wet rock - PLOP! Then to the second - PLOP!
"Tiggy, careful!" called Ziggy.
But on the third jump, Tiggy slipped! SPLASH! She caught herself with her claws just in time, hanging on the rock's edge. Water rushed around her.
"TIGGY!" screamed Ziggy.
Luna and Rocket ran to the edge, meowing loudly. Even Chunk looked worried, his green eyes wide.
Back in the forest, Lily and Dash heard the screaming. "Something wrong!" said Dash.
They gave one more big pull together. "One, two, THREE!" The branch came free! They ran back fast as their little legs could go.
At the river, Tiggy had climbed back onto the rock, but she was shaking and wet. The hammer had moved even closer to the edge.
"The branch!" said Ziggy when his friends returned. "Quick!"
But the branch still wasn't quite long enough to reach from the safe riverbank to the hammer.
"Wait!" said Skye. She had been quiet, but she was thinking. "Make bridge!"
She pointed to some flat pieces of wood near Benny's half-built dam.
"Yes! Yes!" said Benny. "Smart little one! Those are my building boards!"
Working together, the children carried the boards. They were heavy! "Oof!" said Dash. "Heavy!"
They laid the first board from the bank to a big rock. Chunk, being heavy, sat on the end to hold it down. Then they put the second board from that rock to another rock closer to the hammer.
But they needed someone light to walk across. Everyone looked at Luna, the smallest cat.
Luna looked at the rushing water below. Her yellow eyes were scared. The boards wobbled a little. CREAK.
"You can do it, Luna!" said Ziggy. "You're the bravest cat I know!"
Luna took a tiny step onto the first board. Then another. STEP. STEP. The water roared below. ROARRRR!
Thunder crashed closer now - BOOM!
"Rain coming!" said Benny. "Please hurry!"
Luna made it to the second board. She was almost at the hammer! But then a big wind came - WHOOOOSH! The board shifted!
"MEOW!" cried Luna, freezing in place.
"Don't move!" called Lily.
Rocket suddenly had an idea. He picked up the long branch in his mouth and stretched it out toward Luna. She grabbed it with her teeth, and together they made a connection from the hammer to the shore.
"Now push!" said Ziggy.
All four children and all four cats pushed the branch, sliding the hammer along the rocks toward them. SCRAAAAPE went the hammer on the stone.
"Almost!" said Benny, hopping with excitement.
One more push and - POP! - the hammer came free! It slid right to the riverbank!
"HOORAY!" shouted everyone.
Benny swam quickly to shore, grabbed his hammer, and began working fast. TAP TAP TAP! BANG BANG BANG!
The children helped carry stones. Even tiny Skye carried pebbles in her pockets. The cats helped too - Rocket jumped up high to place sticks, Tiggy (now dry) carried small branches, Chunk pushed big rocks with his strong body, and Luna found moss to fill the gaps.
Just as the first raindrops began to fall - PITTER PATTER - Benny hammered in the last piece.
"DONE!" he shouted.
The rain came down harder - POUR! POUR! - but the dam held strong! The water rose but stayed where it should. Under the dam, the children could see little fish swimming safely in their calm pool, protected from the rushing water above.
"You saved my dam!" said Benny. "And all the fish homes too! Thank you, brave little ones!"
He gave each child a small wooden whistle he had carved. "Blow these if you ever need a builder's help!"
"TWEET!" went Ziggy's whistle. The cats meowed happily.
"CIUFFFF CIUFFFF!"
Toby the Magic Train had returned!
"Heroes brave who saved the day, now back home you'll ride away!" sang Toby.
The children climbed aboard, waving goodbye to Benny. The cats jumped in too, Luna curled up on Ziggy's lap, tired from her brave walk.
"Bye bye Benny!" called Skye, already looking sleepy.
As the train chugged home, the rain stopped and a rainbow appeared over the fast river. Benny waved his hammer from his strong new dam.
Soon they were back in the garden. The sun was shining again.
"We did it!" said Dash, running in a victory circle.
"We brave!" said Lily, standing tall.
Ziggy hugged all his cats. "You were all so brave! Especially you, Luna!" Luna purred and purred.
"Team work!" said Skye with a big yawn.
That night, Ziggy told his mom Grace and dad Ethan all about their adventure. Luna sat on his bed, and Ziggy gave her an extra treat for being so brave on the wobbly boards.
"I'm proud of you for helping your friend," said Grace, giving Ziggy a big hug.
"And your cats too," added Ethan with his gentle smile.
The moral of the story: When we work together as a team, we can solve big problems. Even when we feel scared, we can be brave for our friends. Everyone has something special to contribute - whether you're big like Chunk, brave like Tiggy, clever like Rocket, small like Luna, strong like Lily, fast like Dash, thoughtful like Skye, or energetic like Ziggy. Together, we are stronger than alone.
