The Square of the Lost Scents
📅 Published on May 9, 2026
✨ Story Summary
The children fly with Toby to a messy market square. With a traveling swallow's help, they create a new scent for every stall before the storm arrives.
It was a morning with a sky full of fluffy little clouds like cotton candy. In Ziggy's garden, everything was ready for play. Ziggy had brought out a box of colorful building blocks, and beside him were his four cats.
Sofia, the little black cat, purred against his ankles. Dora, the brave tabby, had climbed up the cherry tree. Poldo, big and soft like a pillow, slept on the grass with his belly to the sky. Milo, Poldo's nimble brother, made huge leaps chasing a feather.
"Here they come!" shouted Ziggy, seeing Lily, Skye and Dash come into the garden with their parents.
Lily, with her bright blue eyes full of zest, grabbed a brick right away. "Let's build a castle, come on!" she said firmly.
"I'll make the tallest tower," said Dash, already running toward the box.
Skye smiled and sat next to the castle that was growing. "I'll decorate the windows with little flowers," she said in her calm voice.
Ziggy jumped for joy, because being with his friends made him so happy. The four cats came over to watch too. Poldo woke up just a little.
As the castle grew, all of a sudden a familiar sound was heard.
"CHUFFFF CHUFFFF! CHUFFFF CHUFFFF!"
The children froze. The cats perked up their ears.
"Toby!" they all shouted together.
At the back of the garden, between a hedge and a bush, Toby the Magic Train appeared, sparkling like candy in the sun. He puffed a little cloud smelling of vanilla, gave a friendly whistle, and said:
"Hello, little ones, hop on with me,
to a busy square you'll soon see!
A market waits with colors bright,
but everything's mixed up — what a sight!"
The children looked at each other, full of wonder. A square? A jumbled market? What did he mean?
"Let's hop on!" said Ziggy, doing a little jump.
Sofia, Dora, Poldo and Milo climbed onto the seats with the children. Toby whistled happily and off he went.
The trip was wonderful. The houses of the town seemed to laugh as they passed by. The fluffy clouds turned into thinner clouds, and when Toby stopped, the air had become beautiful: not too hot, not too cold, just right. A warm day.
The children stepped down into a square with a big fountain in the middle. The water bubbled with a sound like laughter. All around the square stood many colorful stalls. But something wasn't right.
"Uh oh," said Skye.
The stalls were a total mess. The apples were mixed in with the buttons. The flowers were sitting next to the pots. The hats were inside a basket of carrots. A lady was looking for bread and finding a shoe. A man wanted to buy cheese and was holding a comb. Everyone was confused.
"But what happened?" asked Lily in a strong voice.
"Maybe a mischievous wind blew through," said Dash.
Ziggy stepped up to a stall and the four cats followed in a line like little guards. Sofia sniffed an apple. Dora jumped onto a box. Poldo sat on a cushion, and Milo leaped from one stall to the next.
As the children watched, from above came a soft rustling. A tiny swallow came down from the sky and landed on the edge of the fountain.
"Hello, little travelers," said the swallow in a kind, calm voice, like a wise grandfather's.
The children came closer.
"You can talk?" asked Dash, surprised.
"Of course," replied the swallow. "I am a traveling swallow. I have seen mountains of snow and deserts of sand. I have seen rivers as big as roads and fish that fly. But today I am here, because help is needed. Or a wing, if you prefer."
The children laughed.
"My name is Ziggy. They are Lily, Skye and Dash. What happened here?"
The swallow opened her wings and gestured toward the stalls.
"It's the fault of a scattered fragrance," she said in a serious tone.
The children looked at each other, confused.
"What is a… fragrance?" asked Skye, puzzled.
The swallow smiled gently.
"A fragrance is a scent, something you smell with your nose, like the smell of warm bread or fresh flowers. Each stall had its own special scent, and by following the scents people would find right away what they were looking for. But this morning a mischievous puff of wind came along and mixed up all the scents. Now no one knows where to go."
"Wow," said Lily, "then we have to put the scents back in their place!"
Right at that moment, in the distance, a low and deep sound was heard. Brrrrumm…
The children looked up.
"What is that?" asked Dash, a little scared.
"It's a faraway thunderstorm," answered the swallow. "Hear how it rumbles? Like a hungry tummy. But it's still far away. We must hurry, because if the rain comes, the stalls will get wet and everything will be even harder."
Ziggy clenched his fists.
"Then let's go!" he said.
The four cats lined up behind him, ready.
The swallow landed on Ziggy's shoulder.
"Do you have an idea, little ones?"
Skye, who had been listening carefully, spoke softly.
"Maybe we can make up a new scent. One for each stall. So people remember which one is which."
"But how do you make a scent?" asked Dash.
"By mixing smells," said the swallow.
The thunder rumbled again, a little closer. Brrrrrumm.
The children got right to work. From far away, Toby puffed a small cloud as if to say go for it.
They went to the fruit stall, but there were also buttons, shoes and hats. Ziggy picked up an apple and smelled it.
"It smells of sweetness," he said.
Lily picked up a pear. "It smells of freshness."
"Let's mix them!" said Dash, cheerful.
In a small bowl that Skye found, they put a few petals from a nearby flower, an apple peel and a piece of lemon zest. The swallow flew above and pointed: "Add a pinch of cinnamon! And a tiny mint leaf!"
When they finished, the bowl smelled of a brand-new scent, fruity and fresh. They called it "happy fruit scent."
They placed it on a saucer at the fruit stall. Right away, a lady came over. She sniffed. She smiled.
"Ah, the fruit is here!" she said, and took a basket of apples.
The children jumped for joy.
They went to the flower stall, but there were also hats and pots. For the flower scent they mixed rose petals, a drop of water from the fountain, and a puff of their own breath. They called it "sweet garden scent." They put it in the right place, and a little girl came to buy a small bouquet.
Brrrrumm. The thunderstorm was even closer.
The children worked fast. Sofia, the black cat, pointed her nose at the things that belonged together. Dora jumped on the stalls and knocked off whatever was wrong. Poldo sat on cushions to keep them in their place. Milo ran back and forth carrying the right items.
For the bread, they mixed the smell of flour, a pinch of golden crust, and the warm smell of the oven. Scent of a good home.
For the cheese, a hint of country grass and fresh milk. Scent of a gentle meadow.
For the hats, the smell of soft leather and a dried flower. Scent of a happy stroll.
One stall at a time, the people started finding what they were looking for. The square filled up with smiles.
But at one point, while Ziggy was fixing up the last stall, the swallow stepped aside and hid behind a basket.
"What are you doing?" asked Lily.
The swallow lowered her head.
"People never see me," she said. "I am too small. They think swallows are a bother, but I just want to help."
The children stopped. The cats stopped too.
Ziggy came closer.
"You helped us so much. Without you, we wouldn't have understood anything about scents."
Skye nodded. "And you taught us a new word: fragrance."
Lily put her hands on her hips. "Now the square has to know who you are!"
Dash picked up a tiny leaf, placed it on the swallow's head like a little crown, and said: "You are the queen of scents."
The children called everyone in the square around the fountain. Ziggy raised his voice.
"Without the traveling swallow, today no one would have found anything. Even though she is small, she knows every place in the world, and she has a wing as big as the sky!"
The people clapped. A lady brought the swallow a saucer with a crumb of sweet bread. A man offered her a sip of cool water. Everyone smiled.
The swallow, deeply touched, beat her wings softly.
"Thank you. I helped you because I wanted to, not to be noticed. But feeling seen is lovely. Even the smallest creature has its place in the world."
Brrrrrum… the thunderstorm was now very close. A drop fell on Skye's hand.
"CHUFFFF CHUFFFF!" Toby came rushing in, puffing a happy cloud.
The children said goodbye to everyone. The traveling swallow gave each of them a little air-kiss and then flew up high, free and happy.
On the train, as the rain began to fall behind them, Toby puffed and said:
"You've made the market shiny and new,
like a sweet dream that's coming true.
The little swallow now flies up high —
even the smallest can light the sky!"
The children laughed, and the four cats curled up on top of each other for a nap.
When they came back into Ziggy's garden, the sun was peeking through the fluffy clouds like cotton candy. The parents were waiting for them with a snack ready.
"Well?" asked Dad Mike, Ziggy's dad, "how was the adventure?"
Ziggy smiled.
"We learned that every creature deserves respect. Even the smallest has its place in the world. Even if you don't see it right away."
And the four cats, all together, went "Meow."
