The Smile That Lights Up the Lights

The Smile That Lights Up the Lights

✨ Story Summary

The children travel by magic train to an enchanted garden where they help a scared firefly named Lumina find special flowers for the Butterfly Queen's birthday by smiling to light her glow.

It was a windy afternoon. The clouds were playing chase in the sky, but every now and then the sun peeked out and warmed the children's cheeks.

Lori, Ale, Viola, and Eletta were sitting on the lawn behind Lori's house. They were making necklaces with the wildflowers they had picked. Lori was very fast at threading the daisies, but his necklaces always came out a bit crooked.

"Look at mine!" said Viola, showing off a perfect necklace.

"It's beautiful," said Eletta in her calm voice, "but I can't tie the knot."

Ale was hopping here and there, collecting more flowers. "I found yellow ones! And purple ones! Like you, Viola!"

Fred, Lori's dad, was watching them from the window. "Lori, be careful not to prick yourself on the thorns!" he said, a bit worried as always.

Chris, Lori's mum, smiled. "They're just playing, dear."

But right at that moment, a familiar sound came from far away.

"CHUFF CHUFF!"

The four children lifted their heads all together. They knew that sound! It was the whistle of a little train, but not just any little train.

From behind the hedge appeared a small, colorful locomotive, with big eyes and a smile painted on the front. It was Toby the Magic Train!

Toby the Magic Train stopped in front of the children and said in a cheerful voice:

"Hello children, are you ready to go? A special garden I'll help you know!"

"The train!" shouted Lori, who was always the first to run. But Fred stopped him.

"Wait, where are you going?"

Chris laughed. "It's the magic train, remember? The one for adventures."

The parents knew that Toby the Magic Train always took children to safe and wonderful places. So they let them climb aboard.

Ale, Viola, Eletta, and Lori climbed into the colorful carriages. Toby the Magic Train whistled again: "CHUFF CHUFF!" And off they went.

The little train flew over the houses, over the trees, over the clouds. The children laughed and looked down. Then, slowly, Toby the Magic Train began to descend.

They landed in a wonderful place. It was an enormous garden, full of flowers of every color. There were flowers as red as strawberries, flowers as blue as the sky, flowers as yellow as the sun. And many butterflies flew from one flower to another.

"How beautiful!" whispered Eletta, with her eyes wide open.

The sun's rays filtered through the tree leaves like magic wands, making everything sparkle.

Lori ran ahead right away. He was always so fast! But suddenly he stopped. He had seen something strange on a big pink flower.

It was a firefly. But not a normal firefly.

You should know that fireflies are very special insects. They have a tummy that lights up, like a little lamp. At night, when it's dark, fireflies turn on their light and look like little stars flying around.

But this firefly was different. She was tiny, had wings that sparkled like a rainbow, and smelled of honey. She moved by flying in little spirals, like when you spin a top.

But her light was off. And she looked very sad.

"Hello," said Lori, coming closer. "What's your name?"

The firefly looked at him with her little dark eyes. "My name is Lumina," she said in a thin little voice. "I'm a luminous firefly. Or at least, I was."

Ale, Viola, and Eletta caught up with Lori.

"Why are you sad?" asked Viola in her determined tone.

Lumina sat on the flower petal and sighed. "I need to find the most beautiful flowers in the whole garden. They're needed to make a special bouquet for the Queen of the Butterflies. It's her birthday and I want to give her a gift. But..."

"But what?" asked Ale, stopping her hopping.

"But I'm scared," admitted Lumina. Her little voice was trembling. "The most beautiful flowers grow in the deepest part of the garden. And there, when the clouds cover the sun, everything becomes dark. I... I'm afraid of the dark."

Now, you might think it's strange that a firefly is afraid of the dark. Fireflies light up at night after all! But Lumina was a rather fearful firefly, even though she was very sweet. And when she was scared, her light wouldn't turn on.

"We'll help you!" said Lori. He was always ready to help.

"Really?" Lumina seemed a little less sad.

"Of course!" said Viola, crossing her arms. "We're not afraid."

So the four children and the little firefly set off into the garden. Lumina flew ahead of them, making her little spirals.

They walked among very tall flowers, taller than them. They saw butterflies as big as kites. They smelled the sweet scent of flowers everywhere.

But then, the clouds in the sky grew bigger. They covered the sun. And the garden became dark.

"Oh no," whimpered Lumina. She stopped and closed her eyes. She was so scared that she started trembling and bumping into flowers because she wasn't looking where she was going.

Eletta also huddled close to the others. "It's dark," she said softly.

Lori looked around. He couldn't see the path well anymore. Where should they go? How would they find the most beautiful flowers?

"Wait," said Ale, sniffing the air. "Can you smell that?"

The children sniffed. There was a very sweet scent, different from the others. It smelled of strawberries and vanilla together.

"It's coming from that way!" said Viola, pointing to the left.

"Maybe those are the special flowers!" exclaimed Lori. "Let's follow the scent!"

They began walking, following that lovely smell. But it was difficult. The darkness was thick and they could barely see anything. Lumina was too frightened to turn on her light.

At one point, Lori tripped on a root and fell to the ground. "Ouch!"

"Lori! Are you okay?" Ale helped him get up.

"Yes, but... I can't see anything. What do we do?"

Lumina felt terrible. It was her fault. If only she weren't so scared, she could light the way. She felt so sad that a little tear rolled down her cheek.

Lori saw her. And he did something simple, but magical.

He smiled at her.

A big, kind smile, that could be seen even in the dark.

"Don't worry, Lumina," said Lori. "We'll make it together."

And something incredible happened. Lumina's tummy began to glow! First softly, then more and more. A warm, golden light lit up everything around them.

"My light!" cried Lumina in amazement. "It's back!"

"It was Lori's smile!" said Eletta, clapping her hands.

That's exactly what it was. When someone smiled at Lumina, she felt less alone, less scared. And her light would turn on.

Viola smiled too. And Ale. And Eletta. Four big smiles for the little firefly.

Lumina glowed even brighter, like a real little star.

"Thank you, friends!" said Lumina. And now her voice wasn't trembling anymore. "Now I'll light the way!"

She flew ahead, lighting up the path. The children followed her, still sniffing that sweet scent.

Finally, they arrived at a hidden clearing. And there they saw the most beautiful flowers they had ever seen.

They were flowers with petals that seemed made of rainbow. Each petal had different colors that changed when you looked at them. And they smelled wonderful.

"They're so beautiful!" exclaimed Lori.

Gently, the children helped Lumina pick the most beautiful flowers. They took seven: one red and gold, one blue and silver, one emerald green, one bright purple, one pink with golden dots, one orange like the sunset, and one white that glowed with its own light.

Lumina tied them together with a strand of magic grass. The bouquet was perfect.

"We did it!" said Lumina, flying in circles with happiness. "And you know what? I'm not afraid of the dark anymore. Because I know that when someone smiles at me, my light always turns on."

The clouds moved away and the sun shone again over the garden. Everything sparkled even more.

In the distance they heard: "CHUFF CHUFF!"

Toby the Magic Train arrived among the flowers, whistling cheerfully.

"You found the flowers and even more, a smile in the dark is a treasure to adore!"

Lumina said goodbye to the children. "Thank you, friends! I'll never forget you. And remember: when you feel sad or scared, look for someone who will smile at you. Or even better, smile at someone else!"

"Goodbye Lumina!" shouted the children as they climbed onto Toby the Magic Train.

The little train set off, flying over the enchanted garden. The children looked down and saw Lumina glowing brightly, carrying the bouquet of flowers toward the butterfly castle.

When they arrived home, Fred ran toward Lori.

"Everything okay? How did it go?"

Lori smiled at his dad. A big, sincere smile.

Fred seemed surprised. Then he smiled too. "Now that's a nice way to greet me!"

Chris hugged Lori. "You seem happy, sweetheart."

"I learned something important, Mum," said Lori. "A smile can make magic."

And that evening, before going to sleep, Lori smiled at the moon outside his window. And he swore he saw a firefly glowing in the distance, as if answering him.
