The Nest in the Bamboo Forest
📅 Published on January 30, 2026
✨ Story Summary
The children ride Toby the Magic Train to a snowy bamboo forest, where they work together with a magical cow named Celestina to build a warm nest for a cold, hungry little bird.
It was a somewhat gray afternoon, with lots of clouds covering the sky like a soft blanket. Raindrops had just stopped falling, and on the window panes there was lots of condensation. Condensation is that damp thing that forms on glass when it's cold outside and warm inside.
Ellie, Alex, Violet, and Lori were at Ellie's house, and they had discovered a wonderful game: drawing with their fingers on the foggy window!
"Look, I made a sun!" said Alex, hopping happily while tracing a circle with many rays.
"I'm making a heart!" said Violet with a determined voice, pressing her little finger firmly on the glass.
Ellie, with her calm ways, was drawing a little house. She was very focused, and every now and then she stopped to think about what to add.
"I'm making a giant ball!" shouted Lori, running from one window to another.
Andrew, Ellie's dad, came over and made a joke: "These windows look like paintings in a museum! The museum of little fingers!"
Emily, Ellie's mom, smiled gently and said: "What beautiful drawings, you're all so talented!"
Suddenly, from outside came a sound the children knew well.
"CHUFF CHUFF!"
"The little train!" yelled Alex, and ran toward the door.
"Toby!" said Violet with her blue eyes sparkling.
They all ran outside into the wet garden. And there, among the puddles that glistened, was Toby the Magic Train. He was red and blue, with a smokestack that puffed colorful smoke.
Toby the Magic Train whistled happily and said:
"Hello children, what a fine day, today I'll take you where the wind holds sway! Tall canes that touch the sky so high, and lots of snow like a white veil nearby!"
The children looked at each other curiously. Tall canes? Snow? What adventure awaited them?
"Can we go?" Ellie asked her mom in a sweet voice.
"Of course, sweetheart, have fun!" said Emily.
The four friends climbed onto the magic train. The wheels began to turn, the colorful smoke became thicker, and everything around them started to change.
When the smoke cleared, the children's jaws dropped.
They were in a very strange forest! But it wasn't made of normal trees. It was made of very tall canes, green and smooth, that rose toward the sky. These canes are called bamboo. Bamboo is a special plant that grows very tall and sways when there's wind.
And that wasn't all! On the ground there was a blanket of fresh snow, white and soft like whipped cream. The snow covered everything and made the forest look like an enchanted place.
"Ohhh!" went Ellie, looking up.
The bamboo canes swayed in the wind and made a strange sound: "CRICK CRACK, CRICK CRACK". It seemed like the forest was talking.
"What's that noise?" asked Lori, stopping suddenly.
"It's the canes moving," said Violet, though she wasn't sure.
Alex jumped into the snow. "It's so soft!"
The children started walking among the bamboo. Every now and then, the wind blew stronger, and the canes bent, casting long shadows on the snow. They looked like giants dancing!
Ellie walked calmly, observing everything with her curious eyes. At one point she stopped.
"Shhh," she said quietly. "Do you hear that?"
Everyone fell silent. In the silence of the snowy forest, they could hear a small sound: "Peep... peep..."
"What is it?" whispered Alex.
"It sounds sad," said Violet.
They followed that delicate sound. They walked through the snow, among the creaking bamboo canes, until they found the source of that crying.
On a snow-covered rock, there was a tiny bird. It was gray with an orange chest, and it was trembling all over.
"Poor thing!" said Ellie, bending down immediately.
The little bird was cold. Very cold. And it also seemed very weak.
"It doesn't have a nest!" said Lori, looking around.
"And it seems hungry," added Violet worriedly.
Just at that moment, the sky grew darker. Snowflakes began to fall, first a few, then more and more.
"Oh no!" said Alex. "It's snowing!"
The children grew worried. The little bird was trembling more and more. The snow was falling thicker and thicker. What could they do?
"MOOOO!"
A deep and gentle sound came from behind the bamboo.
From a snowy path appeared a cow. She was big, white with black spots, and had the sweetest eyes the children had ever seen. Around her neck she wore a golden little bell that went "ding ding" with every step.
"Good day, little friends," said the cow in a warm voice. "My name is Celestina. I heard some little ones in trouble and came to see."
Celestina approached slowly, walking with gentle steps in the snow. As she walked, she hummed a sweet melody. And the children smelled a wonderful scent: it smelled like warm milk and honey!
"A talking cow!" said Lori with wide eyes.
"In the bamboo forest," said Celestina smiling, "everything is a bit magical. Now, I see this little one needs a shelter."
"A shel-ter?" asked Alex, tilting his head. "What's that?"
"It's an important word," explained Celestina patiently. "A shelter is a safe place to stay when it's cold outside or there's danger. Like your house is your shelter when it rains!"
"Ah, I understand!" said Violet. "Like when mommy covers me with a blanket!"
"Exactly, little one with sky-blue eyes," said Celestina.
The little bird went "peep peep" weakly again. The snow was falling harder now.
"We have to do something," said Ellie with a serious but calm voice. "We have to build it a shelter. A nest!"
"But how do you make a nest?" asked Lori.
"I don't know," admitted Alex.
"I can help you," said Celestina. "But it will take everyone's work. Each of you must do your part. Together we can do it!"
Ellie gently took the little bird in her hands and put it under her jacket, close to her heart. "I'll keep it warm while you look for things," she said.
"Good girl," said Celestina. "It needs calm, and you're perfect for this."
Alex looked up. "I can climb and get the bamboo leaves!" And off he went, jumping to reach the lowest leaves.
"I'll look for moss!" said Lori, and ran very fast among the canes, digging in the snow to find the green moss hidden underneath.
Violet, with her strong character, said: "I'll find a good place to put the nest. It has to be sheltered from the wind!"
Celestina smiled. "Perfect! And I... can give some of my soft fur to make it warm."
The children worked together. The snow kept falling, and their hands were getting cold. But no one stopped.
Alex came back with lots of bamboo leaves. They were long and dark green.
Lori brought soft moss. It was damp but very soft.
Violet found a perfect little corner, where three bamboo canes formed a kind of natural little house, sheltered from the wind.
Celestina rubbed against a cane, and some of her white and black fur stayed attached. "Take it, this will keep the little one warm!"
But when they started putting things together... the nest wouldn't stay up! The leaves slipped, the moss fell.
"It's not working!" said Lori, worried.
The little bird, under Ellie's jacket, made an even weaker "peep."
Ellie felt its little heart beating fast. They had to hurry!
"Wait," said Celestina. "You're each trying on your own. Try doing it together, at the same time!"
The children looked at each other. Then Violet said: "I'll hold the leaves!"
"I'll put the moss on top!" said Alex.
"I'll push everything together!" said Lori.
And while the three of them worked, Ellie directed the operations, still keeping the little bird warm: "A little more to the right, Violet. Alex, put more moss in that hole. Lori, push harder there!"
Their hands moved together, like a perfect little team.
And the nest took shape! It was round, soft, lined with Celestina's fur.
"Done!" they all shouted together.
Ellie gently placed the little bird in the new nest. It snuggled in, stopped trembling, and made a different "peep," a happier one.
"But it's still hungry," said Violet.
Celestina smiled. "I have just what's needed."
She came close to the nest and, magically, from her golden little bell came some drops of warm milk. The little bird drank them slowly, and seemed to regain strength.
"Celestina's milk is special," said the cow sweetly. "It's good for all little ones in need."
The snow had stopped falling. A ray of sunshine broke through the clouds and lit up the new nest. The little bird fell asleep, finally peaceful.
The children were tired, but very happy.
"We did it!" said Alex, jumping.
"Together," added Violet.
Ellie smiled, her calm and sweet smile. She felt a bit tired, and would have liked to fall asleep too like the little bird. But she was too happy.
"Thank you, little heroes," said Celestina. "You learned something important today."
"CHUFF CHUFF!"
Toby the Magic Train appeared among the snowy bamboo.
"It's time to go," said Ellie.
They said goodbye to Celestina with lots of hugs. She smelled so much like milk and honey!
"Come back whenever you want," said the cow. "And remember: together you can do anything."
The children climbed onto the train.
Toby the Magic Train whistled and said:
"A nest you built with love so true, four friends with hearts both kind and new! Together you won the challenge today, now homeward bound, without delay!"
The train departed, the colorful smoke wrapped around everything, and in an instant the children were back in Ellie's garden.
Andrew was waiting for them at the door. "So, how did it go?"
"We built a nest!" said Ellie, and then she yawned.
Emily picked Ellie up in her arms. "Are you tired, little treasure?"
Ellie nodded, resting her head on her mom's shoulder. As always when she was tired, she fell asleep quickly, snuggling into her mom's warmth.
The other children told the whole adventure to their parents, all talking at once.
