The Flying Focaccia Race

✨ Story Summary
Dash and friends ride Toby to Bakerland, the Giant Kitchen. With Chelino the crab they save the Focaccia Race: with no recipe, they knead by playing and toss the focaccia skyward.
It was a bright, sunny morning, and in the garden the warm rays warmed everyone's cheeks like a hug. Dash was chasing a ball across the grass, and every time he kicked it he gave a little hop and shouted: "Goaaal!" Ziggy jumped along behind him, Lily kicked super hard with her strong legs, and Skye, sitting in the shade, counted the points with a quiet smile.
"I'm the fastest in the whole world!" laughed Dash, running backward to show off. But he wasn't looking where he put his feet, and... CRASH! He landed right in the middle of the daisies. His friends burst out laughing, and in the end he laughed too, with grass in his hair.
It was right then that a familiar sound came from far away. "CHOO CHOOOO!"
"Toby!" they all shouted together.
It was Toby the Magic Train, popping out from between the hedges with shiny wheels and a happy whistle. He stopped in front of the children, puffing little white clouds, and said:
"CHOO CHOO! Good morning, what a fine little crew,
hop aboard, off we go, there's so much to do!
I'll take you to a land of fresh bread and warm pans,
where you run, laugh and play... oh, my hungry little fans!"
The four friends looked at each other with shining eyes. A land of bread and pans? Whatever could it be? They hopped aboard, and the little train zoomed off into a tunnel of strawberry-colored clouds.
When the doors opened, the children stood with their mouths wide open. They had become as tiny as little mice! All around them was a giant kitchen: spoons as big as slides, mountains of flour as white as snow, and pots as tall as towers. Above the smoking chimneys danced a colorful dawn, with ribbons of green and purple light swaying in the sky like silk.
"This is Bakerland!" said a little voice. "The most magical Giant Kitchen in the world!"
There was the smell of warm bread everywhere. In the distance flowed a river of milk, a spoon as big as a boat floated in a teacup, and from the ceiling hung chandeliers made of sugar. Dash wanted to run and explore everything right away. "What an amazing place!" he said, hopping with joy.
From behind a sack of flour popped a very funny creature: an orange crab with two big claws. He walked sideways, the way crabs do, and he smelled of fresh-baked focaccia.
"I am Chelino, the builder crab!" he said, and he took a bow to say hello. But he tripped over his own legs and rolled onto a spoon. "Oops! Sorry, I'm a teeny bit clumsy."
The children laughed and laughed. Chelino had a funny habit: he measured everything with his claws. He measured Dash: "Small!" He measured a bean: "Big!" Then he got so excited to meet them that he started walking backward. "When I'm happy I go in reverse!" he explained, laughing.
But behind Chelino there was a very sad man. He wore a big white baker's hat and had a mustache that drooped down.
"That's Master Crumb," whispered Chelino. "Today should be the Focaccia Race, the best contest of the year. But a disaster has happened."
"I've lost the recipe for the best focaccia in the world," said Master Crumb in a tiny voice. "Without the recipe the Race can't happen. And everyone will stay sad and hungry."
Dash couldn't hold still. He did three little hops, then he lit up like a light bulb. "What if, instead of reading the recipe, we knead it by playing? We can improvise!"
"Improv... what?" asked Lily, scratching her head.
"Improvise!" said Chelino, so proud of that big word. "It means making it up right now, without knowing how beforehand. You try, you laugh, and little by little something good comes out!"
Master Crumb shook his head. "But you're so small..."
"Small ones are fast!" shouted Dash. "Let's begin!"
And so began the craziest race ever.
To make focaccia you needed water, flour, and salt. But in the giant kitchen everything was enormous, so they had to do acrobatics!
First the water. Dash grabbed a thimble full of water and dashed off along the long wooden table. He flew like lightning, jumped over crumbs, slid under a giant fork, and shouted: "Make way, make way, here I come!" He passed the thimble to Ziggy, who with a dive passed it to Lily in a super-fast relay. SPLASH! The water went straight into the bowl. "First point!" cheered Dash, doing a cartwheel, and he almost landed on his bottom again.
Then the flour. There was a super-heavy sack, bigger than Lily. "I can do it," she said, gritting her teeth. She pulled with all her might, but the sack didn't move even a tiny bit. "Ugh, you're more stubborn than me!" huffed Lily. So everyone came to help her. Chelino hooked the sack with his claws, Dash pushed, Ziggy pulled, and Skye counted: "One, two, threee!" And at last... FLUFFF! The sack popped open all at once and the flour spilled all over everyone, covering them from head to toe. They looked like four little white ghosts and a crab dusted with sugar! Even Skye, usually so calm, laughed till her tummy hurt. Dash blew a tuft of flour off his nose and let out a giant sneeze: "AH-CHOO!"
Then the salt. "I'll do this one, nice and slow," said Skye. Gently she poured a pinch of salt into the bowl, while all around her everyone jumped and squealed. "One at a time, friends, or the focaccia will get as salty as the sea!"
Now only one thing was missing: mixing it all together. And this is where Chelino came in.
"Never fear! I've built the Great Mix-It-All Machine!" he announced, puffing out his chest.
It was a very funny machine, made of spoons, springs, and an old colander, that spun and puffed. Chelino pressed a red button. The machine began to shake. It shook this way, it shook that way, it went BRUM BRUM, then PRRR PRRR, and finally... BOOM! It broke into a thousand pieces, flinging dough everywhere! A sticky little pancake landed right on Master Crumb's nose.
There was a moment of silence. Then Master Crumb sat down on the floor, disheartened. "You see? It's all ruined. You're too small for something this big. The Race is lost."
The colorful dawn above the chimneys seemed to grow paler. Chelino, feeling sad, began to walk backward even though he wasn't happy at all. And for a moment no one knew what to say. The giant oven, at the back of the kitchen, went TICK TOCK: its fire was about to go out, and without fire there'd be no focaccia.
But Dash looked around. He looked at the dough scattered on the floor, he looked at his friends all white with flour, and then he looked into Master Crumb's sad eyes.
"No," he said in a low voice. Then louder: "NO! We are not too small. We are small and clever! We've already done almost everything. Just one last acrobatic trick to go!"
They gathered up the dough all together and made it into a soft, smooth ball. But the wildest feat of all was still left: to make it fluffy, the focaccia had to be tossed up high, super high, all the way up to touch the colorful dawn.
"We need a giant jump," said Lily. "And the fastest one here is you, Dash."
Then Chelino had an idea. "Wait! I'll build a ramp!" He put together a ladle and a rolling pin and, this time, luckily, the ramp stayed standing up straight. Ziggy checked it carefully and pushed it firmly against the table, to make it safer.
Dash took a big breath. He looked up there, where the green and purple ribbons danced in the sky. His heart was beating hard. Then he took off running, faster and faster, ran along the table, went up the ramp, and... HE TOOK OFF FLYING!
With a super-high jump he tossed the ball of dough up high, past the pots, toward the sky. The focaccia flew like a balloon, spun among the ribbons of dawn light, dove into the green, danced in the purple, and then floated gently back down, golden and smelling of a thousand colors.
PLOP! It landed right in the baking pan. Master Crumb slid it into the giant oven just in time, a moment before the fire went out.
Everyone held their breath. One, two, three... DING! The oven rang.
The focaccia was ready. It was golden, soft, and smelled so good that Chelino started to drool.
Master Crumb tasted it. His eyes filled with joy. "But... but it's even better than the one from the lost recipe! How did you do it?"
Dash smiled. "We improvised! We played all together."
Master Crumb understood. "The most important recipe wasn't on that paper," he said, moved. "It was the joy of making it together. And four little friends taught me that."
And so the Focaccia Race really did happen, and that day everyone won: Dash, Ziggy, Lily, Skye, Chelino, and Master Crumb. They danced under the colorful dawn eating the best focaccia in the world, while the builder crab walked backward out of pure happiness.
When it was time to go back, the whistle sounded again: "CHOO CHOOOO!" Toby the Magic Train had come to pick them up. The children gave Chelino a big hug and climbed aboard.
Toby puffed his little clouds and said:
"CHOO CHOO! Head home now with a smile on your face,
you kneaded pure joy in this magical place!
Remember, little ones, deep down in your heart:
even the smallest can play a great part!"
And as the little train raced through the strawberry-colored clouds, the four friends, tired and happy, fell asleep dreaming of focaccias flying into the dawn.
